Switch Up Your Routine!
Nothing is more mundane than sticking to the clockworks of the same routine day in and out. The same applies to your workout! Often, we find ourselves sticking to the same exercises, the same pair of shoes, the same route and the list goes on. This causes static stress on the body as we use the same muscle groups repetitiously, leading to imbalances down the kinetic chain. Not to mention getting stuck in the same routine kills the novelty and joys of exercising. So we say it’s time to change things up! To optimise your health and better enjoy your exercise, try to alter at least one variable of your exercise daily. Be it the pace, duration or even terrain, a little variety is sure to revitalise and refresh your workout routine, keeping you healthy and contented.
Don’t just stick to running! Expanding your workout routine beyond simply running will greatly enhance your results and propel you closer towards your end goals. The best way to do so is by including strength and flexibility training as a permanent fixture in your routine. Just include 10-20min of strength training after a few runs each week, and focus on the core (not just abs!), hip region, and lower-body to maximize your efforts on these days. You don’t have to pay a hefty gym membership fee to do these too. Body-weight exercises such as push-ups, planks, lunges and various trunk exercises can be done everywhere and squeezed into little pockets of spare time. When done continuously in circuit fashion, such strength training will further enhance your cardiovascular fitness. Moreover, aside from helping u get stronger and stay healthy, strength training has been shown to increase metabolism for several hours after exercise, helping you burn more calories even while resting!
Eat More Fats
What? Yes you read that right. Of course, being lean and trim is crucial for health and performance, but this does not mean you should totally eradicate fats from your diet. We are not talking about unhealthy fats such as those from preserved foods, but healthy fats from sources like olive oil, avocado, nuts and cold water fish to enhance your intake of lipids each week. A research study done by The University of Buffalo showed that runners who consumed more healthy fat in their diet were significantly less likely to incur overuse injuries and illness as they undertook a strenuous training regimen. Adequate fat intake helps strengthen the cell membrane, protect the immune system, and allows you to absorb certain vitamins to a higher degree. But how much is enough? Aim to consume 25-30% of your total calories from healthy fat and you are well on your way.
