Today, the very mention of Black Friday drives people into a shopping frenzy. Associated with massive bargains and hordes of people, few actually know of the origins behind this day.
A widely-circulated story is that on this day, companies recorded their earnings in black. Back in the day, losses were recorded in red and profits, black. Therefore, the term Black Friday was coined because of the surge in sales after Thanksgiving Thursday, and companies were “out of the red”.
However, this is only the “reinvented” story as the actual origins are in fact, much less cheerful. The term “Black Friday” actually came out of the old Police Department in Philadelphia in the 1950s. Cops then used the phrase to describe the chaos which ensued year after year the day after Thanksgiving; where the city centre was inundated with a massive influx of people and the worst traffic congestions. On this day, the policemen were not allowed to take the day off and had to work strenuously long hours, leading to the creation “Black Friday”. This term later caught on with the media and the rest was history.
Fast forward more than half a century later to today, and the massive crowds still very much persist.
Many a time, these crowds turn rowdy and boisterous too, leading to breakouts of violence and fights.
